You are probably wondering… “What does Attachment- Based Teaching means?” Well, this can be quite a mind shift for some of us! Some of you have attended the Parent Night School Night where Ansebe Bicoff- Smit spoke about attachment regarding parenting, but how and why would this apply to the Carnegie teachers and school? To start, let’s do a little exercise. Think about your own experiences with teachers at school, what do you remember about them? Were these experiences mostly positive or negative and how did interactions with teachers shape you and/ or encouraged you to learn? I remember my 1st grade teacher very vividly! When I think about her she brings a smile to my face. She was kind, loving and patient. I felt deeply understood, loved and accepted by her. I worked hard to do well in her class, in fact I went above and beyond because she believed in me. Why do I share this story? Most of us have not consistently experienced a positive connection with our teachers. In fact, some of us might have never experienced this with a teacher. Research shows that a strong attachment with a teacher leads to higher grades, greater emotional regulation, better social competence, lower levels of ADD/ADHD and it encourage children to challenge themselves academically. Carnegie House has decided to embrace this challenge of becoming an attachment- based school in order for students to flourish and reach their full potential. Our hope is that Carnegie House will offer students a safe haven far beyond just academic performance. Feeling connected, safe, loved and accepted by teachers will be at the heart of what makes Carnegie House different than other schools. Teachers are currently undergoing attachment training and we gladly welcome feedback from parents regarding changes that they may notice.
